Exploring Kerala #5: A Glimpse of Backwaters
The incredible journey onto the backwaters of Kerala and exploring the backwater-dependent village life with the enchanting beauty of landscapes is only found at Alleppey of India. Alleppey is situated at the southern part of Kerala and locally named as Alappuzha. It is called the Venice of East for its network of serene canals and lagoons within the city. The main attraction of Alleppey is the backwaters and the houseboats on it.
A Glimpse of Backwaters:
The backwaters are the network of interconnected canals and lagoons. The tranquil atmosphere of the backwaters and the greens of the surrounding villages create alluring scenic views of the backwaters. Moreover, the dramatic background of clouds on the clear blue sky makes the atmosphere more enchanting.
There are various modes of transport to travel throughout the backwaters. The houseboat cruise, Shikara boat, ferry-boat and motor boats. The houseboats are like the floating five-star or three-star hotel on the water body.
Why are the Houseboats not a good choice for travel?
If you truly enjoy the beauty of backwaters, you should travel either by the simple Indian boats or by the Shikara boats found at the starting point of the canal. Though the eye-catching houseboats are famous for this trip, but those have many limitations. Firstly, the houseboat companies are charging so high from the tourists for a day or an overnight trip. This is for its publicity and hike. The charges are totally unreasonable and varying from tourist to tourist.
Secondly, the houseboats cannot enter the narrow channels within the mangrove forests of the backwaters for its huge size.
Thirdly, a whole day is not required to enjoy backwater. After sometimes, you really feel bored in the cruise. It’s a place for relaxation only. If you are tired of your hectic job schedule and want to relax for a day within a serene environment, houseboats are perfect for you. There are lots of stuff to entertain you throughout the trip.

A journey in the backwater body:
We booked a Shikara boat for 4 hours trip though the time limit depends on your choice (3 hours is the normal duration). I think it’s a good choice for a family trip within the lagoons in a budget. But, for a true traveler, the Canoe (a local boat for accommodating two or three people) is the best choice. Most of the foreign travelers normally take this type of ride and explore the backwaters more intensely.
But, 3 hours journey in the Shikara boats in a comfortable environment is more than enough for the tourist as it can enter the narrow channels and cover all the visiting places of the lagoons. As it is front, sides, and back opened, you can enjoy the scenic views from every angle of the boat and also capture the photos from different perspectives in a full freedom. Moreover, you can enjoy the fresh air of backwater that a lifetime experience.
