Exploring Kerala #4: A One-day trip in Wayanad

If you desire to see the breathtaking scenic views from the hilltops with the floating clouds and want to sense the charming aroma of tea and spices with the ecstasy of enjoying the splendid waterfalls in a day, just make a day trip in Wayanad. Wayanad is situated on the north-east side of Kerala in India. This is a district of vast biodiversity with a number of tourist places and ideal for trekking too. The popular tourist places of Wayanad are Chembra Peak Hill, Edakkal caves, Banasura Sagar Dam, Soochipara hill, Pookot Lake, Wayanad Wildlife sanctuary, Lakkidi viewpoint, Thiruneli temple. If you want to cover all those, you need to stay there for at least 2-3 days.  In my last article of Exploring Kerala#3, I have discussed staying and traveling in Wayanad. But, if you don’t have time to stay there, you can make a day trip and cover most attractive places of this district.

A One-day trip in Wayanad:

We visited Wayanad from Kozhikode that is 56 km far from Wayanad.  After 2 hrs of a journey in the winding roads of the Western ghats and enjoying the scenic views with the floating clouds on the hilltop, we finally reached the Lakkidi viewpoint.

Lakkidi viewpoint:

The serpentine Western ghat pass.

It is the gateway of Wayanad. The bird’s eye view of the cloud filled mountain and greenery around it,  with the serpentine Western ghat pass are really astounding.  Early morning view is better if the sky is clear. The place is also very attractive for its luxuriant vegetations and gurgling mountain stream.  You can see monkeys frolicking through the roadside. Hence, don’t carry any food packet in front them except you have no intention to feed them. You can enjoy spectacular sunset if you visit this place during the evening.

Pookot Lake:

Pookot lake.

It is a natural freshwater lake, and brimming with the evergreen and very near from Lakkidi.  Boating and foot spa are available in this lake. Here you can find some local shops for buying Wayanad masala tea (tea with spices) and local spices.

Soochipara Waterfalls:

Soochipara is one of the beautiful places in Wayanad. The main attraction of this valley is the three-tiered waterfall, which is tumbling down from 200-300 meter height. You need to trek approx 2-3 km path within a dense forest of this valley. The beauty of this path is spectaculars. Nature decorates the path to the sublime view of the cloud-covered Chembra peak, the scenic tea-estate, the wild deer and monkey, and the different varieties of stunning trees. After walking that slippery, rocky and hard, and path, when we reached to that fall, our all tiredness was wiped away with the stream of this fall. This is so magnificent that we just forgot our tiring trek within the drizzle.  The waterfall plummets down into the large pool of water that is a good place for swimming. Another highlight of this place is the treetop hut within the dense forest.

Basura Sagar Dam:

Basura Sagar Dam.

This is a 30-minute drive from Soochipara. It is the largest earthen dam in India and second largest in Asia. This is a picnic spot. The boating facility is also available here.  The scenic beauty of this place is amazing. But, I couldn’t take any picture from here as my leg was injured during the visit of Soochipara waterfall. So, I collected this picture from Google.

A day trip is not enough to visit Wayanad. But, we covered the most attractive places in it.  It is a very good place for honeymoons and adventure too. The Couples will enjoy this place if the stay there for 1 or 2 nights. The trek lovers will enjoy the trip most when they visit Chembra peak that is ideal for trekking. This is all about my Wayanad trip and I will come back with the experience of visiting Alleppey in my Exploring Kerala series.
