Xeldem Tribal Festival: #AtoZchallenge

Xeldem is a very beautiful and scenic village in Quepem Taluka of South GOA. The village is famous for a tribal festival. The aim of that festival is reviving, promoting and preserving the State’s unique traditional games, culture and cuisine, especially the customs of the tribal people. This festival continues for 2 days.  The GTDC  promotes the Goa tourism with its unique traditional and cultural festival in Xeldem, which is only 50 Km from Panaji.

How is the Xeldem Tribal Fest?

Last year, this festival happened on 7-8 of January 2017. Goa is a destination which the tourist visit quite frequently. But, apart from the marvellous sea beaches and Forts, Goa has something to offer the tourists. It is the culture and traditions of the Goan Christian Tribes. If you go to the out scarce of Panaji, you can find a different side of this pretty little state that is yet to explore. It was really amazing to see how passionately Goans are trying to preserve their culture, traditions and heritage.

Events of the Festival:

The tribal association will organise various events, competitions, folklore programmes and special programmes for the children.  Different kind of Tribes come to this festival to display their culture and tradition. Some tribes are trying to preserve the old artefacts from Goan lifestyle, some are trying to preserve the spice plantations that were introduced by the Portuguese and some are trying to depict the traditional lifestyle of Goans with the help of statues.  Their efforts are so strong that many art and culture lovers of Goa are putting their hands together for the common purpose.

The tribal children perform various traditional games like Chateani, Logoreani, Ton Barani – Guli Danda, preparation of traditional items like Mol’la (palm leaf mat), San’n (broom making), Nivoni (paddy grass weaving) and Fulla Fati (head bands of flowers). Many people arrange the stalls of traditional instruments and Kapdam (clothing). It is unique to the tribal community. They also prepare Pita Gulio, Pinagre, Donne, Sanna, Pattoleo, Shevyo and Soji and display for sale.

Xeldem as a tourist spot:

Xeldem itself a picturesque village on the shore of the Arabian sea. You can find a small fishing harbour here. Each year, many foreign tourists come here to explore the unique tradition and culture of  Goan Christian Tribes. Many photographers from different states of India often come to this place to organize the photo tour on tribal people.  Still, Xeldem is the very pristine destination in Goa that needs to explore.
